the five second rule

oh you all know this one, if you drop food on the floor it is still ok, as long as you rescue it before 5 seconds are up….. the urban legend is that bacteria will not form before 5 seconds have passed.

Now I know there have been a lot of tests on this topic, from university studies  to T.V. shows… well lots of university studies, most in the dorm rooms though I think. lol.

shows you a borrowed picture so you know what food dropped on the floor looks like….

okies, if you are going to invite me over for dinner and have a accident…  please be advised I have the .0000002 second rule.. *nods lots*

So, recent tests however, have indicated that most food picks up bacteria just about as soon as it hits the floor..  it is natures zero second rule.

But foods that are salty or high in sugar do well at keeping bacteria at bay…. hence the success of the university studies, potato chips and chocolate bars are ok on the floor…. the staple diet in dorm rooms.. *nods from experience.. ugh I mean wisely*

So as with all food, when in doubt throw it out.

  1. We got a 1 sec rule at our house. If it drops to the floor its fare game for our lil girl. Okay I mean my dog. ~L~

    • lol, is that how long it takes for her to get to it? and you thought she was lounging around the table because she liked being with you… imagines her eyes darting and nose twitching… waiting… hoping for accidents.

Oh don't be shy, speak your mind.. leave a comment. :-)
